EV Charger Installation

Most of our customers need the level 2 charger. This charger can be installed in your garage or in the area where you park your car.

It takes about four hours to install an EV charger. We can supply and install your charger without the need for additional equipment. However, installation requires a dedicated line to the panel whether we install it in your garage or outside. All work is performed to adhere to the ESA guidelines.

We even supply the permits for your convenience.

Benefits of EV Chargers

Electric cars are taking the world by storm as more people try to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and opt for a reliable, affordable source of transportation. Electric cars require less maintenance, making them far more accessible to drive. You won’t need oil changes, which makes them better for the environment. You’ll get better mileage from using your EV charger and reduce general maintenance costs over the life of your car.

Driving an EV car is an exhilarating experience with lots of power. You also feel good knowing you are driving an eco-friendly car that’s not emitting harmful gases!

Design & Technology

We use the most advanced technology for EV chargers. Our level 2 chargers offer an electric vehicle charge station with:

  • 208-240 VAC
  • Up to 30 amp and 7.2 kW
  • SAE J1772 connector, standardized for over 10 000 charging cycles and compatible with plug-in vehicles sold in North America
  • Wall mount with integrated cable rest
  • For indoor or outdoor installation (-40°C à 40°C)

The level 3 charger offers a direct current fast-charging station which places the charging station inside the building. It is also significantly lower in cost. Features include:

  • Voltage Range: 360-508VAC 3-phases 50/60Hz
  • Max. Current: 80A @ 400VAC; 67A @ 480VAC (protection: 80A Circuit breaker)
  • Input power factor > 0.93
  • Efficiency > 94%
  • Earth Leakage Current < 3.5mA
  • 3-pole AC contactor coupled with emergency button
  • -20°C to + 40°C, maximum altitude 3500 m

We can help you choose the best charger for your needs so you can join the EV revolution!

Why Professional Installation is Essential for Your Home

While many home appliances are “plug-and-play,” an EV charging station is a high-demand appliance that places a significant load on your home’s electrical infrastructure. Attempting a DIY installation or hiring an unlicensed handyman can lead to overheating, tripped breakers, or even electrical fires.

At Hi-Lite Electric, our licensed electricians ensure that your home’s electrical panel can handle the increased load. We perform a comprehensive load calculation before every installation. If your current panel is reaching its capacity, we can provide seamless panel upgrades or install smart load-management systems that prioritize your car’s charging without interrupting your home’s other electrical needs.

Understanding the Differences: Level 1 vs. Level 2 vs. Level 3

Choosing the right charger is about balancing speed and infrastructure.

  • Level 1 Charging: Most EVs come with a Level 1 cord set. This uses a standard 120V household outlet. While convenient, it only adds about 5 to 8 kilometers of range per hour. This is often insufficient for daily commuters in the GTA who need a full battery every morning.
  • Level 2 Charging: This is the gold standard for residential installation. Operating on a 240V circuit (similar to a clothes dryer or stove), a Level 2 station can fully charge most vehicles in 4 to 8 hours. This allows you to take full advantage of overnight “off-peak” electricity rates in Ontario, saving you significant money on your monthly utility bill.
  • Level 3 Charging (DC Fast Charging): Typically found in commercial settings or public rest stops, Level 3 chargers can provide an 80% charge in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. While these are less common in private homes due to the massive power requirements, Hi-Lite Electric is fully equipped to install these for commercial properties, fleets, and multi-unit residential buildings.

Our Step-by-Step Installation Process

When you choose Hi-Lite Electric, we follow a rigorous process to ensure your installation is safe, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing:

  1. Site Assessment: We visit your home to determine the best location for the charger. We look at the distance from your electrical panel to your parking spot to minimize conduit runs and costs.
  2. Load Calculation: We assess your existing electrical panel to ensure it can support a 40-amp or 50-amp circuit.
  3. Permitting & Compliance: As an ESA-authorized contractor, we handle the filing of all necessary notifications with the Electrical Safety Authority. You won’t have to worry about the paperwork; we ensure everything is recorded correctly for your home insurance records.
  4. The Installation: Our team installs a dedicated high-voltage circuit, high-quality cabling, and the charging unit itself. We use weather-rated materials for outdoor installations to withstand the harsh Ontario winters.
  5. Testing & Demonstration: Once installed, we test the unit with your specific vehicle to ensure the communication between the car and the charger is seamless. We’ll show you how to manage the cable and use any “smart” features your charger might have.

Maximizing Your Investment: Incentives and Rebates

The transition to electric mobility is supported by various levels of government. Depending on current provincial and federal programs, homeowners and business owners in Toronto and the GTA may be eligible for rebates on the purchase and installation of EV charging stations.

Additionally, many insurance companies look favorably upon professional installations verified by an ESA certificate. By choosing Hi-Lite Electric, you are ensuring that your installation meets the highest safety standards, which protects your property value and your vehicle’s warranty.

Smart Charging and Future-Proofing

The world of EVs is evolving rapidly. Modern “Smart Chargers” allow you to monitor your charging sessions via a smartphone app, schedule charging for times when electricity is cheapest, and even integrate with solar power systems.

When we install your station, we don’t just think about the car you drive today; we think about the future. We can install larger-gauge wiring or additional conduit to ensure that if you add a second EV to your household in the future, the infrastructure is already in place. This “future-proofing” approach saves you thousands of dollars in labor and material costs down the road.

Serving Toronto and the Entire GTA

We are proud to be the leading choice for EV charger installations across the Greater Toronto Area. Whether you are in the heart of downtown Toronto, the suburbs of Mississauga, or the growing communities of Vaughan and Richmond Hill, our fleet of fully stocked vehicles is ready to serve you.

We understand the local building codes and the specific challenges of GTA homes—from older houses in Etobicoke that require delicate panel work to new builds in Brampton ready for high-tech integration.

FAQ

Can I install an EV charger if my panel is full?

Yes! In many cases, we can use "tandem" breakers to create space or install a sub-panel. If your home’s total power supply is insufficient, we can also install a Load Management Device (DCC). This smart device monitors your home's total power usage and temporarily pauses the car charger if you turn on another heavy appliance (like an electric oven), then resumes charging once power is available.

Does cold weather affect my home charger?

While cold weather can reduce a vehicle's battery range, it does not negatively affect the charger's ability to deliver power. We use industrial-grade, cold-weather-rated cabling for all outdoor installations to ensure the cables remain flexible and durable even in -40°C temperatures.

How much will my electricity bill increase?

While you will see an increase in your electrical usage, it is significantly cheaper than the cost of gasoline. By charging during "Off-Peak" hours (typically overnight), most GTA residents find that they save between 70% and 80% on "fuel" costs compared to a traditional internal combustion engine.
